So last night i stood my first watches by myself. I had watch from 2am to 7am. You rotate between helmsman, phone talker, and aft lookout.

helmsman drives the ship, which is not as exciting as i once thought it was. at four in the morning it's more fighting to stay awake than it is steering the course. phone talker coordinates communication, and does some other crap that sucks, and aft lookout mostly freezes his nuts off out on the flight deck.

The thing that sucks about watching by yourself is you have so much time and silence to occupy. so in the first hour you sing everysong you remember and then pieces of some you think you know. Second hour you begin to think about the girl you can't be with, but really want to. Third hour, you start to think about the fact that you don't even know that much about her and begin to wonder if you were mistaken about the whole thing all along. Fourth hour you just wish that you could stop torturing yourself about her because it still is better off this way and then you pray not to fall asleep at the wheel. Fifth hour you realize that you know all of the words to the bloodhound gang's song "Asleep at the Wheel." and then you hope that your relief comes soon so you can at least take a shit and have breakfast before you have to go do work for your division.

I'm told that on other ships, they let you sleep after you had that watch. Not here. and seeing as how i woke up in the middle of the four hours of broken sleep i got ahead of the watch, after having dreamt that i fell overboard and couldn't figure out where i was when i woke up, i'm not in the best of shape right now dear readers.
