Two things: Ra-Xephon: Neat Series, or Eva Ripoff? And your privacy's lack of existence...
Posted Mar 7, 2004 - 16:36:26

Yesterday, I spent most of my waking time at the Ra-Xephon brainspike. Yes, I sat in one place, for over twelve hours, watching Ra-Xephon from beginning to end...

...to make it less pathetic sounding, I will mention that I wasn't alone - there were at least six other people there at any given time (and at one point, we had a total of ten people watching). So, it wasn't so much antisocial, as just sad. *grins*

My thoughts? Well, it's okay. Definitely the best Eva ripoff I've ever seen (and I've seen quite a few in my day). Ra-Xephon is definitely worth checking out for anyone who hasn't done so yet. Should you run out and buy it? Well, that's a hard question. If you are a part of an anime club, convince the club to buy it. It's a show you'll want to watch once (it is definitely worth a look), but you probably won't be watching it again.

In other, completely different news, SlashDot.org reports that ChoicePoint Inc. is putting out software to allow anyone to run background checks. Technically, you're supposed to be a small business owner to purchase the software, but apparently ChoicePoint isn't actually requiring people to produce licenses to make the purchase...

...does this irk anyone besides me? I mean, the fact that anyone could run a check of your background makes it easier to either stalk someone, or in some cases, get ahold of enough of your background information to steal your identity.

Needless to say, this is not a good thing.

Grrr. As privacy is flushed down the toilet, we just seem to sit back and take it. I think that it's so hard to figure whether the information age is good or bad... I mean, here *you* are, reading my blog. This is information I publicly show to the world... but you'll notice my phone number and address don't show up anywhere on the site. I open parts of my life to the world, but only the parts that I want to.

But guess what? I'm pretty sure that any determined Joe Shmoe could find out not only where I live, but my cell phone number and home phone number in just a matter of minutes online - for free. That's right, you can get ahold of all of that about me in just a few, short minutes WITHOUT purchasing any software.

We enjoy the fact that we have a wealth of information at our fingertips, but we must also accept that there are sacrifices that need to be made. As information we want to share becomes easier to see, the stuff we *don't* want to share becomes easier to find as well.

Geh. I give up.
