Little House on the Prairie March 9, 2009 - 20:46:38
The stories of a pioneering farming family in Minnesota caught the imagination of readers when Laura Ingalls Wilder wrote her real life accounts in the series of books, Little House on the Prairie. The popular books were adapted into the hit TV series that ran from 1974-1983. Changes were made for the television show but the spirit of the books came across.

The stories centered on the Ingalls family, beginning with their re-location to the community of Walnut Grove. They endure many trials and tribulations as they try to farm the land and get to know their new neighbors. Charles Ingalls is the head of the family, a kindly and hard working man. He was played by Michael Landon, who had previously made his name as Little Joe, the youngest Cartwright son in Bonanza. Charles has a caring relationship with his wife, Caroline, played by Karen Grassle.

Much of the charm of the series is gained from the couple's children. Viewers watched them grow up over nine seasons, encountering the problems and joys associated with young people from any era. The eldest daughter Mary was played by Melissa Sue Anderson. Middle daughter Laura was acted by Melissa Gilbert, who became a familiar face on made for television movies. The youngest daughter, Carrie was played by a pair of identical twins. The Little House on the Prairie family was later extended when they adopted Albert as their son and a brother and sister were also adopted.

As with any successful series, it needs good supporting characters to lend light and shade. The general store owner, Nels Oleson and his gossip mongering wife, Harriet were involved in many storylines. In addition to the regulars, Little House on the Prairie attracted an impressive line up of guest appearances, some guests being in the early days of their careers and some being established stars. Veterans such as Burl Ives, Red Buttons and Ernest Borgnine appeared. Richard Basehart, of Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, also appeared and a young, Sean Penn. Johnny Cash and his wife, June Carter Cash made a cameo appearance together.

Three TV movies and various sequels continued the story. The complete original series is available on DVD. Interest in the books was revived in the wake of the television versions and the real life home of Laura Ingalls Wilder in Walnut Grove was turned into a museum and receives many visitors. The actual filming for Little House on the Prairie took place on a movie ranch in the Simi Valley, California.
