Eastern Time.
Posted Oct 19, 2011 - 13:19:37

I've been living in the Eastern Timezone for almost a year and a half now. I know that sounds like a while (and it is), it's the first time I've ever lived permanently outside of Central time. This may not seem like a big deal to most people, and honestly it wouldn't be, except for a couple of things.

First off, I still telecommute to an office in Eau Claire, WI. This means my entire work life is contained within Central time. It's like the bi-annual time shift happens every day, gaining an hour in the morning and losing it in the evening. Really, what happens is that my brain functions on Central time in the mornings and and Eastern in the evening. It's a much easier thing to do than you think though, really - 5:00PM just stops existing as an hour. I go from 4:49PM to 6:00PM and I've stopped even thinking about it.

Where things get complicated though are here, on this site.

My self written blog is linked to server time, and currently it's set for Eastern Daylight -- I'm not sure if it's because my new webhost (as Drak was purchased by A Small Orange a while back) is on Eastern time or if it's just because the server doesn't shift with daylights savings. In any case, it was an easy enough thing to leave alone.

But then there are my webcomics.

I started UnCONventional when I still lived in Eau Claire. Because of that I had set up it to update at 12pm Midnight Central time (a no brainer). Oddly enough, when Irresponsible Irreverence started, even though I'd been living in Lafayette for a few months, I still set it up for Central time as well... mostly to be obstinate I guess. I hadn't really adjusted yet, in truth. Those first few months I really was completely on Central time mentally.

But then Irresponsible Irreverence ended and I decided to launch the new Chronicles of Crosarth. Doing so forced me to face a dilemma: what timezone should I set it's updates for?

In the end, I decided to bite the bullet and set it up for Eastern time. This meant though that I had one comic on Mondays and Wednesdays going up at one time, and another comic going up on Tuesdays and Thursdays at another time. I know that many people don't really care what time the comic updates, but others do -- I always see a traffic spike right after a new installment goes up.

My solution was simple though -- I changed UnCONventional's update time.

So now this site, at least at the moment, is updating completely on Eastern time. Which means I finally have to accept that I live in it now.

Well, mostly anyway.
