The First Snow
Posted Dec 1, 2010 - 10:09:05

First SnowfallSo last night we got our first snow here in Indiana. And by snow, I mean the light dusting we would get some years as early as late October in Wisconsin -- but the winter season is slightly shorter here, and it's taking some getting used to.

Because of this though, driving Crysta down to the University this morning was a bit of an adventure.

First off, in Wisconsin, the roads would have been salted already. This is not so much the case in Indiana. This means that they are, in fact, a bit slick with a light dusting of snow. This wasn't that big a deal in our little front wheel drive car, but some other people - most notably a utility truck I was behind on my way back to the apartment - had a bit of an issue out there.

And like in any town, the instant snow hits apparently half of the drivers on the road totally forget how to drive on slick roads - braking too suddenly or fishtailing (which is pretty damn hard to do in this little snow, but I'll be damned if they didn't manage to). The whole drive took almost twice as long to do, and I guess I'm going to have to start allowing more time in the morning.

Except this will all melt by the end of the day most likely.

It's really weird being this far south, really. I'm not used to weather this nice in December, and November was bizarrely warm for me as well. On days where I know Wisconsin was getting snow, we'd get rain. On days where it was below freezing back home, it was fifty degrees here. I've spent my whole life in a colder place - and while this isn't exactly a tropical climate, it's still pretty strange for me.

But what else is new?

Indiana does have a real winter though, even if it's shorter, and I'm a bit afraid of what the roads are going to be like around here then. I have no idea how prepared or unprepared they'll be... so I guess I will just have to wait to find out.

This I am not excited for.

Oh Indiana...I will tell you now you are going to laugh at them when they close school for a few inches of snow.  The county I lived in Boone owned 4 snow plows , and they used to close the whole county after a few inches of snow and you will be arrested if they catch you out there driving on the roads.    They never clean the roads properly due to the reflectors.  There will always be a layer of slush.  We've been rear ended twice in bad weather down there.

Its quite sad really, my family was confused by them and their lack of equipment and well, would close school for low temps and a dusting.

But at least you'll actually have flowers by April :)
