Tragedy of Willie got DMCAed on Youtube
Posted Oct 24, 2008 - 9:57:10

Some of you may recall the video I put out quite a while ago titled "The Tragedy of Willie." It wasn't my first video (although it was the first one I ever uploaded to Youtube), but it has been one of my more popular little films. For those who don't, here's a quick reminder:
The video tells the tale of "Willie" the headless Alaskan Salmon and what happened to him during one fateful F'mas day. The music in that original version is, of course, the famous song House of the Rising Sun. That song is, of course... copyrighted. I was young, what can I say.

So, like the original version of Not a Japanese Girl it was pulled... sort of. These days, when it's a music copyright, Youtube gives you the option to switch out the music with a track they have the license to. So, I took advantage of it. After trying out several different options, I decided to pick the most melodramatic track I could possibly find. What track was that?

"My Immortal" by Evanescence.

Can't get more melodramatic than that. It entirely changes the flavor of the video, and while I don't like it as much, I think it adds something new to the video. So, without further ado, I provide to you the modified version of "The Tragedy of Willie."
Weep for our loss. And by loss, I refer to the original, superior soundtrack and the "Free Willie" at the end.

Not the fish. Okay, a little bit the fish.

The new version is weird. It takes a video that's supposed to be about you guys being weird and turns it into a pseudo-serious memorial to a frozen fish. I was amused that the guitar kicks in when Topher pours the ashes into the river.
It's weird, I know.  But it worked.  The entire reason I used the song was just because the guitar kicked in at that point you know. :P  I only had a short list of songs that fit the length of the pre-existing video... so that's how things ended up.
So where is the old version hosted? live video?
iFilm/Spike actually -- although I do have a copy on LiveVideo.com too just in case.
