So, I'm back from the Northwoods
Posted Aug 8, 2005 - 9:03:27

A Blue Heron on a BranchSo, I'm back from my time in Rhinelander, WI. It's an annual family vacation thing which I'm amazed we still do (now that we've all moved away from my parents). We usually take just one week, but this year we managed to get two. My sister flew in from Washington DC, and as this is the first time I've seen her since her law school graduation several months ago, it's been rather nice.

I did the standard fare of Northwoodsian activities - canoeing, hiking in the woods, looking at the northern lights, counting shooting stars, getting dragged by a motorboat on a tube clinging for my dear life... you know, the basics. Of course we still went to Forester's Ballpark/Vandervort Memorial Field. They have a pickup softball game twice a week during the summers, and we've been playing there most of my life. My dad actually used to play there as well in the 60's, and it's really a unique tradition. The ballpark is on the commonly named Lost Lake, not too far from St. Germain.

Saw my fair share of birds as well, as the picture of a Blue Heron that is with this post can prove. I didn't see anything I hadn't seen before (just an Osprey or two, a couple Eagles, a few Ravens, plenty of Blue Herons). My mother spotted a Green Heron (and took several photos) which was slightly surprising, as we've never encountered a Green Heron there before. But I'm sure you don't care too much about our exciting adventures in Birds, so I'll move on.

I will be putting together a photo gallery for this year, as the latest photos I have from the Northwoods are from back in 2002. I have to sort through a couple hundred images to find the ones that look the best, so that may take a few days. Right now, I'm mostly concerned with sorting through the piles of e-mails that are sitting in my inbox...

Why does the image of you in an intertube make me smile.. and laugh?

I don't really know.. but I needed that, first real laugh I think I've said since the whole moving thing began...
A tube ride done properly is a battle between tuber and the guy driving the speed boat.

The driver (well, more accurately pilot) driver will attempt to throw the tuber, and the tuber will defy the driver by holding on for their motherf***ing life.

It's fun, but it usually ends up with me getting soaked, and my arms hurting for several days.
Did you find the Northern Lights?
