My friend is dead, and I am numb.
Posted Mar 25, 2004 - 21:06:10

I'm sitting here as a cold, clammy night wind slips past the thin metal screendoor of my balcony. And I am numb.

I got a phone call, about an hour and a half ago, from my friend Shannon. She asked me if I would be willing to come back to Eau Claire a day early. I asked why. It turns out that a mutual friend of ours hung himself last Sunday, and she wants to go back a day early for the funeral.

My blood froze.

I wasn't close with him, not really. We hung out every once and a while, and sparingly talked. Heck, most of the time I spent with the guy was either sitting in the Tower's TV lounge watching something like Monster Garage, or occasionally talking with him in the smoke filled walls of the Joynt... But I considered him a friend. We said hi to each other, we talked about useless crap, we did what guys do...

...and now he's gone. Erased from the world.

John Whitely, aged 24 years, and now just a memory in the minds of those he left behind.

Goddammit.

I'm so numb about this. So damned numb. I haven't been able to feel a thing since I heard this. He's gone, and now the world is cold.

I can't write about this anymore... Here's a link to his obituary - I don't know if you have to register with the site to read it though... I can send it to anyone who wants to see it.

I'm going to just sit for a while and think about this.
