Sitting in my chair, Ostara, and today's news round up.
Posted Mar 20, 2004 - 13:31:13

I love this chair. I just need to say that. I have missed my big, green, ugly chair. It looks hideous, but it's got to be the most comfortable thing in the world, I swear. It almost makes up for the fact that I'm stuck on dialup for the next week. *grin*

When my brother was out on the East Side (of Milwaukee) the other night, some asshole slashed one of the van's tires, which really sucks. Bunch of savages in this town, I swear...

Today is the Equinox, so Happy Ostara to all of my Wiccan and Pagan readers, and happy spring to all of the rest of you. It's a lovely day out, and a good 50 degrees here in Milwaukee, so go outside and enjoy the gorgeous weather (and if you live somewhere where 50 degrees isn't considered warm, you can go to hell *grin*).

Anyways, I've got a few articles I want to share today. I do want to point out, that I reported on the whole CASSHERN thing yesterday almost a full twelve hours before Slashdot said anything about it... thus making me infinitely cooler. Of course, I got it from Penny-Arcade, so it just proves that they're infinitely cooler than I am... but we all knew that already. By the way, people should comment or say on the board whether they like the new direction my blog is going (a mixture of personal and information, instead of just one or the other). I look at the server stats, I know you people are reading this... use the COMMENT link on the bottom of this entry already...

We'll start out with some non-technology news for a change, with some interesting stuff on the US government. Indian Country is reporting that the US government wants to keep an international law ruling kept quiet. This ruling affects Native American property rights. I know this may not seem to be that big of a deal to most of the readers of this blog, but trust me -- it is.

And since I'm often talking about lawsuits, I do have to mention that SCO, the guys who have been suing anything connected to the Linux community left and right, has perhaps bit off more than they can chew. See, they decided to sue a couple of government agencies. See, that just seems like it should be marked into the "stupid" category in my book. Frankly 90% of what SCO does on a daily basis these days strikes me as idiotic though, so I shouldn't be surprised. And before anyone jumps to SCO's defense (fat chance of that happening, but still...), allow me to remind you that in the light of a lawsuit from Novell, SCO may not even own the rights to what they're suing for.

Ah, the beauty of irony in the early afternoon sun...

Speaking of the internet, we have some interesting, nerdy news. DigiTimes.com is reporting that IPv6 will begin rolling out in China and Japan as early as 2005, and not long after for several other Asian countries. For those of you who don't know what IPv6 is, it's Internet Protocol Version 6. Currently, we use Internet Protocol Version 4 (IPv4), which means we use IP addresses that are forumulated by four numbers, each between the values of zero and 255, seperated by periods (for example, the real address for TRHOnline.com as of this writing is 65.109.180.50). What's happening is that as the Internet has grown, we're running out of addresses to give servers. IPv6 would add two more numbers to this string, greatly increasing the number of addresses available. Why 6 and not just go 5? Well, that's simple: We don't want to have to do this again in ten years. This won't effect home users all that much, other than the fact that they'll have to download a patch for their operating system to support it... but that will take almost literally no time at all.

Word.

That ends today's celebration of Geekdom. Y'all have a good day.
