My last mention of NoBrandCon, I swear -- and Genesis overclocking...
Posted Mar 16, 2004 - 12:30:41

Okay, so I know I've been rambling on about NoBrandCon for a while... and you're probably all sick of it. But, I do have one last thing to add. I just finished writing up a full gathering report on the event, so you don't have to hear about it in the blog at least. So, go read it, make comments, whatever. I'll stop bugging you guys about it. *grin*

To return to my observations of the inane, I ran across a very strange site the other day. It's about overclocking your Sega Genesis/Megadrive. That's right, overclocking a Genesis. I have yet to decide whether this is infinitely cool, or whether it's really nerdy... or both. For those of you who don't know what overclocking is, it's when you take a processor and make it run faster than it's designed to. See, when they make computer chips, there isn't exactly a listed speed limit. What the do is test the chip to find out how fast it can run, and remain stable. They then mark the speed down even a little more, to be safe. So, when you overclock a chip, think of it as driving at 75 miles per hour where there's a 65 miles per hour speed limit. Sure, the roads were designed to be driven safely at 75 miles per hour, but they put the speed limit lower just to be safe.

Overclocking often leads to overheating though, so usually cooling systems of various levels of elaborateness are constructed... but apparently not with the Genesis overclocking, as it's not supposed to heat up that much.

Of course, it really shows you how long we've come technologically, when an overclocked Genesis is still only running at 16.0 MHz... yeah...

I have a research paper to get back to work on though, so I think I'll go do that. I shall be typing forever, I swear.
