We have a Bible theme today: Pat Robertson and Live Action Evangelion
Posted Jan 19, 2004 - 15:12:51

Okay, so I made the mistake of flipping by the 700 Club today. Now, normally, this will usually result in me getting angry about something - but I'm used to Pat and his gang of spoon-feeding morons feeding misinformation about this, that, and the other thing, so it takes a lot for anything to stick with me for more than five minutes. But this time, it was different. This time, it wasn't a "misinformation moment," this time it was worse.

This time, it was all about giving money - more specifically, giving money to them. Their message was easy to follow, if you gave less money to the church than what you could actually afford, god would give you less income the next year. While I thought that part was silly, it just sounded like sales talk to me, it didn't bother me that much because the basic message didn't encourage people to do anything they couldn't afford. But the next part of their message is what bothered me. They said that if you give more money than you could afford, god would raise your income.

Ummm... excuse me?

So, in a world where our economy is in the dumpster (anyone who tells you an economy is decent when there are so many unemployed people out there really needs to redefine their definition of "decent"), this guy is telling people to spend more money than they can afford.

So, while being fiscally irresponsible, and trying to sell salvation for cash, he's also encouraging greed - by claiming god will give a cash reward.

Oh, thank you Pat, for being the spiritual leader that you are. I would have never been so poor and greedy without you.

Yeesh.

In other news, I had no idea that ADV and Gainax were trying to shop around a live action Evangelion live action movie. No studio has been attached to the project yet, so it's still sort of a pipe dream - but ADV's released some design sketches that WETA Workshop has done for them. Ain't It Cool News has them here. They've done some screwy things, like respell "Rei" to "Ray" (Why? I have no idea... it's the same damned name), and given Madoka and Asuka completely new names.

I understand the name changes, but I don't like them. I mean, I'd be happy with the movie as long as the character's acted right, so I don't mind the mind changes all that much... but I think that American audiences are savvy enough to handle names like Shinji and Asuka.

I think that as long as the characters remain faithful to the original, it will be good. With the glimpses we've seen now with the design drawings, I have to say that WETA is definitely the team to do it. They have the ability to create such beautiful, sweeping scenes that really would fit with the Eva feel, not to mention that their designs are incredibly faithful to the original Anime series.

I don't know, but if this movie gets made, it could be really good. Or it will suck. Kind of a coin toss really...
