Hey, at least you're not an exploding whale.
Posted Dec 8, 2003 - 17:14:37

For those of you following the Soap Opera of my life, you may have noticed that I'm not exactly in a happy place right now.

But I've come up with a plan to cheer myself up. It's a small mantra that goes something like this:

At least I'm not the exploding whale.

Now, to those of you who don't what the "exploding whale" is, it's a very old story, which has been widely circulated via e-mail, newsgroups, and various other means.

Much as I am one to loath internet rumor, this one doesn't bother me at all. Why?

Because this one is actually true.

That's right - it wasn't staged, it wasn't invented by a bored sixteen year old, and it wasn't stolen from the backpages of reader's digest. It's actually real.

The story is that at one point, a whale had beached itself on the coastal beaches of Oregon, and died. The locals, being the geniuses of our age, decide that the best way to get rid of a whale carcass was to make it explode. Yeah. These guys were really firing on all cylanders... yeesh.

So they did, and let me tell you... it was whale-tastic. Dead whale parts spewn everywhere, damaging automobiles and various other property damage...

Can you imagine calling Geico up and explaining to them your car had been damaged by dead whale? Yeah.

In other words, while I may feel like crap now - at least I'm not the exploding whale... or the people who made it explode.
